John Lang is currently completing a PhD in Applied Mathematics at the University of Waterloo under the supervision of Dr. Hans De Sterck. His work entails studying how mathematical modelling of human interaction and decision making over social networks might provide insight into the development and evolution of social movements like the Arab Spring.

John is a native of Western Canada and spent his formative years at the University of British Columbia (2003-2007) and the University of Alberta (2007-2009) where he completed a B.Sc. in Honors Mathematics and an M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics. His research interests during these early years focused on epidemiological and immunological models for the spread of a disease through a population or host. After the 2007-2008 financial crisis John became interested in modelling of social systems and decided to complete an M.Sc. in Econometrics and Mathematical Economics at the London School of Economics (2009-2011).
