PerinRuttonsha-Headshot-WICIIn her doctoral research, with the Department of Environment and Resource Studies (ERS), Perin Ruttonsha applies concepts from complex systems, social-ecological resilience, social innovation, and biomimicrymdiscourses, in examining processes and opportunities for the long-term, adaptive transformation of human settlements along sustainability pathways. She is especially interested in relational dynamics, social-eco-technological regime shifts, the human dimensions of change, social-ecological novelty, perceptions of abundance, and the scaling of complexity.

Perin’s background spans integrated design strategy, cultural management, and creative arts. In particular, she specializes in planning and facilitating collaborative, multi-stakeholder engagement processes, including arts-and-design-based ‘sensemaking’. Primarily, this work has been rooted within sustainable development and health care sectors, locally and internationally. Project outcomes have comprised schemes for social housing, affordable housing, mixed-use planning, rural and suburban revitalization, cultural spaces, public green spaces, youth engagement programs, community programs, and a travelling exhibition. As well, Perin has customized curricula in visual arts and design, at elementary and post-secondary levels, emphasizing experiential learning approaches. A few of her previous roles have included, Strategic Design Consultant for Ryerson University (‘10-‘14); Program Development Officer (‘07-‘08), Special Projects Officer (‘08-‘09), Faculty Consultant (‘08-‘09), and Research and Content Development Consultant (‘12) for the Institute without Boundaries at George Brown College; Guest Artist at Art City in St.James Town (‘07-‘10); Marketing Manager with Alternatives Journal (‘04-‘06); and, International Year of Volunteers (IYV) Program Coordinator (‘01) with Volunteer Canada.

Perin maintains independent practices as a visual artist and design strategist, expanding on the themes of her research. www.perinruttonsha.com.
