IMG_3179Virginia Capmourteres is a PhD Candidate in Environmental Sciences at the University of Guelph, working under the supervision of Dr. Madhur Anand. She works on the development of indicators and models to assess ecosystem integrity and potential under the scope of complex systems. More specifically, her interest is to develop quantitative methods to evaluate ecosystem health, understanding ecosystems as complex systems, where both structural and functional components interact, processes occur at different scales, and anthropic influence is evidenced through a variety of land uses that affect the integrity of the system as a whole, compromising biodiversity and future human well-being.

Since beginning her graduate program at the University of Guelph, Virginia has been an NSERC CREATE Forest Complexity Modeling Program scholar, receiving rigorous training in complexity and modeling. Virginia has had the opportunity to interact with collaborators (e.g. Credit Valley Conservation authority) to help them develop models of ecosystem integrity and select multi-scale indicators for their monitoring programs. Additionally, she has led the writing of a book chapter on indicators of biomass and complexity applicable to ecological forest management.

Virginia previously completed a BSc in Biological Sciences at Universidad Maimonides, Argentina. In her home country, she contributed to projects related to participatory monitoring programs of fauna, the design of compensation reserves, the development of environmental management plans, and the estimation of biodiversity conservation value.
